The recipe selection for Sweet Melissa Sundays this week is Guinness Gingerbread. Yep.. Guinness. As in the beer. Normally I would be sitting out during weeks like this since I don't drink. It isn't really worth it for me to go out and buy alcohol for something that I'm not sure I would care for anyway.
You may be wondering why this week is different. Well... Nathan was supposed to be home. (I swear, I think the WHOLE world is getting sick of "he should've been" by now!) I figured that he would eat the gingerbread AND drink whatever Guinness was leftover. So, it wasn't a waste for me to go out and buy Guinness since I knew it wouldn't be wasted.
As you could've guessed, Nathan isn't home. But, I didn't want to sit this week out especially because I had the Guinness in the fridge already. I cut the recipe in half because I knew that I wouldn't eat much of it and I wasn't going to be able to give the whole cake away. Luckily, my friend's husband just returned, so I had someone to pawn this off on! :)
If my husband (or anyone else who likes Guinness) saw me making this gingerbread, they probably would've freaked. The entire recipe calls for 2/3 cup of Guinness. I cut the recipe in half. That means that I poured all but 1/3 cup of Guinness down the drain. My husband would say that is a shame! :) Another thing that is funny to me is that I have heard a lot of people complain about the smell of molasses. Me? Well I got nauseas at the smell of the Guinness and actually prefered the smell of molasses!
Now on to the taste. I didn't care for it too much. I don't know if I psyched myself out with the Guinness smell or if I just don't like gingerbread. I've never had actual gingerbread before, only gingerbread cookies. So, I have nothing to compare this with, either. It wasn't bad, but I only took one bite. Just not my cup of tea.
Check out what the other SMS bakers did this week and hopefully you will be able to get better reviews! Thanks to Katie of Katiecakes for choosing the recipe this week. You can find the recipe at her blog!

My hubby would call it beer abuse! HA HA!! Men and they're beer! Since I don't drink either I don't know if I would like, I've always been intrigued by Guinness Cake but never tried that either for the same resaon!
When I saw your post my first thought was that your cake looked exactly like mine! I heaped a big pile of whipped cream on mine too. Sorry, you didn't like it but I'm glad you tried. I actually thought this gingerbread had pretty mild flavors because I liked it and I'm not normally a huge fan of gingerbread. Bummer that Nathan isn't back yet but hopefully soon!
That's a shame that Nathan isn't home to enjoy the cake you made.
I sat this one out because it's too hot here for gingerbread.
It's so funny that you mention it--the smell of molasses really does get to me. I'm sorry that Guinness does the same thing for you. Even though this wasn't your fav, it sure looks good!! Hope you're able to find some people to share it with; I'm sure they'll love it.
That is an awesome photograph.
I am a HUGE gingerbread fan, eating it year around whenever the craving strikes.
I like the rare sip of Guiness, (but mostly in a Black & Tan). LOL on thinking it is Guiness abuse. I think it would be gingerbread abuse! Aren't the sexes funny!
Oh, Grumpy would say the same thing! I rarely drink beer and when I do feel like a little he always says to me when I get it out "you better drink it all". LOL.
I know what you mean about the taste, it just wasn't gingery enough for me.
So glad you decided to bake along, I threw the rest of my Guinness down the drain too. Dreadful stuff on its own :p

Awr, I'm sorry you didn't like it! It LOOKS pretty though! :)
Hey, I think it's great that you put yourself out there adn tried! Now you'll never have to wonder. The picture looks great!
Gingerbread is not for everyone, but at least you tried and that's what counts. Your cake looks great.
It sure looks yummy--whipped cream seems to do that to just about anything! ;)
You are so cute! My hubby would have said it was sacrilege to get rid of alcohol by pouring it down the drain but I just wait until he is not in the room =). I LOVE your gingerbread with the dollop on top...very pretty. I am sorry you didn't care for it much but your presentation is perfect.
Sorry to hear that it wasn't a favorite and that Nathan wasn't back to enjoy it. It looks great with all whipped cream on top!
I'm sorry you weren't a big fan of this - and I'm sorry you weren't able to drink the Guinness. Send it my way next time ;)
I love the smell of molasses! I have been wanting to try that Guinness stout cake. Too bad that you didnt enjoy this.
The hubs and I appreciate the Guinness aspect of this delicious-looking cake! ;)
Your ginger bread looks awesome. Too bad you didn't like it. There is always next week!
Aw, I hope Nathan gets home SOON! Sorry you didn't like the cake, but at least you gave it a shot. Keep smiling!!
Sorry you didn't love this, but it sure looks great! Mostly, I hope that your Nathan gets home SOON!!!!!
I'll bet that waiting is driving you crazy! Hope Nathan gets there soon. I like both molasses and guinness and gingerbread, but I didn't really like this recipe. Go figure. But that pile of whipped cream might have improved my opinion!
Nancy
I hate Guinness too. But thank God my boyfriend was around to drink the rest of it. Your piece of cake looks super cute though - especially with that dollop of cream on top.
It's too bad you didn't end up liking it. I think with gingerbread you either love it or hate it!
Sorry you didn't like it, you were such a trooper for making it anyway. I am not tired of hearing about your husband being away - well, actually I am but only for your sake, I can't wait for the HE IS ACTUALLY HOME post- I can't imagine how hard it is without him and all the false hope.
Too bad you didn't like it but it sure looks great. Almost chocolaty. Love the whipped cream topping for contrast.
I'm like you and struggle with desserts that include alcohol. I've been buying the tiny shot bottles of the stuff when I can otherwise I leave it out or don't make the recipe. Even though I don't drink AT ALL I can see where it would add a little something.
Sorry about your honey still being delayed coming home.

sorry you didn't fancy this but at least you tried it. i ran out of time and had no guinness so i skipped it
